At approximately 8:20 AM, an employee reported a suspicious red gym bag to security. The employee stated the bag was sitting immediately outside the door #10 entrance. The employee also stated he and others, were concerned the bag may contain an explosive device. Lead officer Jerry Atkins traveled to the location and confirmed there was an abandoned suspicious gym bag on the property. Officer Atkins cleared all employees from the immediate area and contacted the police department.
The police department arrived on the scene at 8:30 AM. After assessing the situation, the responding officers decided to err on the side of caution and dispatch the bomb squad- the team arrived on the scene at 8:45 AM. Additional security officers were dispatched to assist with managing the situation. After they arrived, the officers were posted at the entrances near the abandoned bag. The officers remained at the entrances to prevent employees from getting too close to the suspicious bag.
A technician from the bomb squad donned a blast protection suite and approached the suspicious bag. Once the bag was in the technician's custody, he proceeded to inspect its contents. After completing his inspection of the bag, the technician declared it harmless. He then carried the bag back to the bomb squad vehicle and turned it over to the police officers standing by. THe following is an inventory of the abandoned bags contents. There was no form of ID in the bag:
- four used cleaning scrub pads
- one used eating utensil (spoon)
- one used bar of soap
- one used container of Vaseline
- one real estate classified advertiser
- one half dozen napkins
Officer Atkins turned the bag over to security. Then the bomb squad closed out the incident at 9:30 AM and gave security permission to resume normal business activities. The bag was logged as lost property and is currently in the possession of security.
